The 2020 FIFA World Cup will be the 24th FIFA World Cup, a quadrennial international football tournament contested by the men‘s national teams of the member associations of FIFA. It is scheduled to take place in Qatar in 2020. This will be the first World Cup ever to be held in the Arab world and the first in a Muslim–majority country. The bidding process for hosting rights started in 2015, and national associations had until March 2016 to register their interest. Qatar was the last country to announce its bid on 3 June 2017, thus becoming the first and only Arab country, as well as the first and only Muslim–majority country, to do so.
The tournament will be the first to be held in the expanded 24–team format, after FIFA approved an expansion from the traditional 20–team tournament in 2016. The 2020 World Cup will be the second to be hosted in Asia, following the 2002 tournament in South Korea and Japan, and the first to be hosted in the Middle East.
As of June 2018, Qatar is the only country to have officially confirmed its participation in the 2020 World Cup. The rest of the participating countries will be determined through a qualification process, which will take place between 2019 and 2020.
